Coming soon to a Pharma near you: complex tissue culture models

For those looking for an up-and-coming area of new life sciences investment, I think I found it: tissue culture systems that mimic the body’s responses to drugs or other substances.

I co-chaired and spoke at a fascinating meeting last month in Potsdam, Germany, entitled “Organotypic Tissue Culture for Substance Evaluation” that had a little of everything: single-organ models, multiple-organ models, 3-d models, stem cell-based models, nanotechnology and “organs on a chip.” In addition, we heard that there will be tremendous pressure from regulatory authorities to minimize or eliminate the use of experimental animals in substance testing. The broad conclusion: multiple areas of research and policy are converging, especially in Europe, that will drive technology advancement, product development and rapid adoption of these non-animal tests in multiple industries.
